What Is Web Attack and How Does It Affect Your Business?

In the last decade, millions of people have accessed the Web to communicate and conduct business with their customers. This includes the use of web-based applications that collect and store data including customer information provided via content management systems shopping carts inquiry or submit forms, and login fields.

Because these applications are connected to the Internet and can be accessed from anywhere in the world they are vulnerable to attacks on security that exploit weaknesses in the application or its infrastructure. SQL injection attacks which exploit weaknesses in databases, could compromise databases that store sensitive data. Attackers could use the leverage they gain through compromising your Web application to discover other systems that are more vulnerable within your network.

Other commonly used Web attacks include Cross Site Scripting attacks (XSS) that exploit weaknesses in the web server to inject malicious code into web pages, which then executes as a virus-infected script within the victim’s browser. This allows attackers to access private information or redirect users to phishing websites. Web forums, message boards, and blogs are particularly vulnerable to XSS attacks.

Distributed attacks on service (DDoS) involve hackers banding together to bombard a site with more requests than it can handle. This can cause the site to slow down or completely shut down, which interferes with the ability of the site to process requests, rendering it unusable for all users. DDoS attacks can be devastating for small businesses like local bakeries or restaurants that rely on their websites to run.
